Potty Training 101
Parenthacks has an article on potty traing, which is something we are in the first week of doing with our son. He is doing great for only one week. He has been ready for at least 6 months and we just got serious about getting him out of diapers this week. As first time parents, we really didn’t know where to start. We did get a book that had some good advice, Parenting Guide to Toilet Training. It has a 3-step plan to successful potty training and signs of readiness. We also have been reading a book with our son to get him ready, Flush the Potty!, it has a button to push that sounds like a flushing toilet. Here are the things we have learned so far:
- don’t use pull-ups, it is too confusing for your child to go between diapers and underwear
- for the first few days let your child go naked from the waist down, they will not like the feeling of being wet
- let your child feel like they are in charge of going potty, dont’ pressure them to sit on the potty all of the time
- accidents will happen, always have spare underwear and pants when out of the house
- reward, reward, reward (we are using M&M’s)
We are also going to implement a chart to give a big reward for extended success (a Wiggles DVD for an entire week of staying dry).
What are some tricks that you have used with success?

The Olympics & Kids
The February 2006 issue of Parents magazine has some great ideas to get your children involved in celebrating the Olympics. Some of their ideas include making a Tasty Torch (rice crispy treats in the shape of a torch in an ice cream cone), making medals out of cupcake liners and having a cheering section with your own handmade flags (they have a flag template on their website).
Is there anything you are doing with your children for the Olympics?

Snacks for Kids
Our son (2 1/2) is always eating or so it seems. He has his normal 3 meals a day with the family (he eats what we do, we do not make meals just for him) and a couple of snacks during the day. I just bought a cookbook that has great snack ideas, Family Fun Super Snacks. Some of his favorite snacks are:
- goldfish
- cheerios & raisins
- yogurt
- cheese & crackers
- veggies (he has recently discovered cucumbers)
- peanut butter & crackers
What are some of your kids favorite snacks?

A boy and his Queso

My boy loves the queso.
Macaroni & Cheese
- 1 lb. Land O’Lakes American Cheese, cubed
- 2-3 cups of milk
- 1 stick of butter
- 1 tsp. flour
- salt & pepper to taste
- 1 lb. elbow or shell pasta
Preheat oven to 375. Heat the milk and the butter in a good sized pot. Sprinkle in the flour, salt and pepper. Add the american cheese, a little at a time, until it is melted into the mixture, stirring constantly. Meanwhile, boil up water for the pasta and cook the pasta for 2 minutes less than the box calls for. Pour the cheese sauce into a deep baking dish, then add the pasta until there is about 1/4 inch of sauce standing on the top. Bake until the top is brown and bubbly.
