Potty Training 101

Parenthacks has an article on potty traing, which is something we are in the first week of doing with our son. He is doing great for only one week. He has been ready for at least 6 months and we just got serious about getting him out of diapers this week. As first time parents, we really didn’t know where to start. We did get a book that had some good advice, Parenting Guide to Toilet Training. It has a 3-step plan to successful potty training and signs of readiness. We also have been reading a book with our son to get him ready, Flush the Potty!, it has a button to push that sounds like a flushing toilet. Here are the things we have learned so far:

  • don’t use pull-ups, it is too confusing for your child to go between diapers and underwear
  • for the first few days let your child go naked from the waist down, they will not like the feeling of being wet
  • let your child feel like they are in charge of going potty, dont’ pressure them to sit on the potty all of the time
  • accidents will happen, always have spare underwear and pants when out of the house
  • reward, reward, reward (we are using M&M’s)

We are also going to implement a chart to give a big reward for extended success (a Wiggles DVD for an entire week of staying dry).

What are some tricks that you have used with success?
