Creating Traditions

Everyone has traditions that they remember from childhood. I remember that every Christmas Eve, we would drive around town and look at Christmas lights. Every year on my birthday, my mother would make me a 3 layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting (Ok, she still does and I’m 34. I’m not ashamed.).

My wife and I have tried to find opportunities to carry on traditions from our childhood (ex., the Christmas tree lights), while adding new ones along the way. One is, with both boys, we have framed footprints at newborn, 6 months, and 1 year. Another tradition we started with our oldest was to make their birthday a “special day”, by taking a trip to the zoo, go on the carousel, etc. – even though we were celebrating their birthday with a party on the weekend (which, let’s face it, is more for the parents anyway – a 1 year old doesn’t care).
