Farm Fresh Food for Your Family
During the summer, our family loves to go to the local farmers’ markets and get fresh produce. We are trying to teach our children healthy eating habits. Caleb is old enough to help pick out the fresh vegetables and then gets to help cook them at home. We have discovered that he is more willing to eat things if he is a participant in the grocery shopping/prepping/cooking.
Local Harvest is a great site to check out. One of the features of the site is community-supported agriculture, or CSA, which offers subscribers boxes of seasonal produce along with milk, meat and eggs delivered fresh each week for a fee. You can use the site to also find local farmers’ markets and family farms.
Has anyone subscribed to a local CSA?

Raising Children Who Love to Read
Both of our children love books. Even Camden, at 14 months old, will sit and look through a pile of books for extended periods of time. His latest thing is to grab a book out of the bag of books we keep in the living room, walk over to you and plop down in your lap so you can read the book to him. Over, and over, and over again.
The secret (at least this is our theory, and it seems to hold true), is reading every day. Almost as soon as we brought them home from the hospital, we made reading a part of the “bedtime” routine. Usually two or three books (board books, which tend to be short anyway), while they were drinking their final bottle.
Additionally, we’ve always had a wide assortment of books available wherever the kids were playing, and we read to them throughout the day.
How have you incorporated reading into your children’s lives?

Children’s Museums
We went to our local children’s museum, Children’s Discovery Museum, today. Our kids had a great time and it is always hard to get them to leave. They have some great exhibits to play with:
- Main Street Market/Nutrition Cafe
- Sugar Creek Water Play
- Toddler Backyard
- Luckey Climber
- Paint Wall…and so much more.
They also have a “The Discovery More! Store” for educational books, toys, puzzles, art/crafts supplies and games. Throughout the year they have classes and special events/programs for the children. A great new feature is the birthday registry.
Association of Children’s Museums has a great tool for locating children’s museums around the United States or internationally.
Are you planning on taking your children anywhere special this summer?
