Bloggy Giveaway - Winter ‘08 Edition

It’s that time again…time for another Bloggy Giveaway.  I am not as prepared as I had planned to be, but decided to participate anyway.

My husband is quite the coffee drinker and is very specific about the coffee he drinks.  We have a local coffee place in town, Coffee Hound, that roasts their own coffee.  It is my husband’s favorite place to get coffee to get in our town and one of our favorite places to take our kids for breakfast.

So, I am going to give away 1 lb. of coffee from Coffee Hound, whole bean or ground, regular or decaf.  The roasts change from day to day, so that will be a surprise.  I will pick a winner on Friday and will contact the winner by e-mail.

Homemade Baby Purees

One of the things I have done for all of my children is to make their first baby food purees.  I decided that is was time to start making some for my daughter, so I have spent the last week making her first purees and getting them stashed in the freezer.  She is only taking oatmeal right now and we are in the process of determining if she is even ready for solids yet.  But, I do have plenty of purees to start with when the time is right.

I always thought it would be time consuming to make purees, but it doesn’t take that much of my time and I enjoy making it for them.

So far, I have made sweet potato, carrot and squash puree.  My parents have some fruit trees on their property and have always made our children their apple, pear and peach purees.  These have been in my basement since the fall and I just need to get the fruit into ice cube trays and frozen.

The squash ready to be cooked.
Ready for the freezer.
All of the finished vegetable purees.

Some books for reference that I have used are First Meals and Super Baby Food.  Also, check out Stephanie at Keeper of the Home.  She is doing a series on raising healthy eaters and has a lot of helpful information.

Favorite Ingredient Fridays - Taco Dip

Here is a great recipe for your Super Bowl party.  It is a favorite of my husband.

  • 2 packages of Hidden Valley Ranch Fiesta Dip Mix
  • 2 (16 ounces each) containers sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 bundles of green onions, chopped
  • 2 small cans black olives, sliced
  • 1 carton grape tomatoes, sliced

Mix the 2 packages of dip mix with the 2 containers of sour cream.  Spread in a dish.  Top with cheese, onions, olives and tomatoes.  Serve with chips of your choice.

Brrr…It’s Cold Outside

If it had not been for the boys having a hair appointment this morning, we would not have left the comfort of our home.  The temperature is below 0 with the wind chill and we have spent our day huddled in front of the fireplace and drinking plenty of hot chocolate.

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 (15 ounces) can pineapple chunks, undrained

Place all ingredients in a slow cooker and cook on low for 4-6 hours.

The Best Laid Plans

On my list of goals to accomplish this year was to implement a new cleaning schedule for deep cleaning our home.  I had been motivated after reading about Lauren’s cleaning plan and decided to get started.  I had the best intentions of starting this week.

But, the kids and I have been struck down by a cold and a horrible cough, the kind that hurts your chest and back every time you cough.  My husband is sure I will be coughing up a lung anytime now.  So far he has been spared of the dreaded illness.  So for the next few days we are laying low (except for preschool tomorrow), snugging a lot with the kiddos and trying to recooperate.  With a high predicted of 8 on Saturday, nobody wants to go out anyway.  Hopefully, no doctor visits are in the near future, except maybe a visit to the chiropractor to boost all of our immune systems.

So, the cleaning plan will have to wait until next week to be started.  I am really hoping I can make it work for our family and get some organization back in our home.
