Spring Reading Thing 2008 - Wrap Up

It is time for Callapidder Days Spring Reading Thing 2008 wrap up. This time I did not do so well on my reading list. I did finish the bible study and The Complete Guide to Getting and Staying Organized, a book I would highly recommend. I just got sidetracked by other books that came my way. So, I did end up reading a lot this spring, just not what I had intended to read.
Caleb and I have plugged along at the books we are reading together. We have discovered that we are really enjoying My Big Book of 5 Minute Devotions. It is a great devotional for kids (Caleb is 5) and he asks read it each night.

Tuesday Happenings
My Tuesday morning bible study started back up today. This spring we are studying, Living Beyond Yourself.

This is the third Beth Moore bible study that our women’s group has studied and I am sure it will be as excellent as the first two were.
The rest of our day was spent going to vote in our state primary and then eating pancakes, that I made for my family, for Pancake Tuesday.

Homemade Baby Purees
One of the things I have done for all of my children is to make their first baby food purees. I decided that is was time to start making some for my daughter, so I have spent the last week making her first purees and getting them stashed in the freezer. She is only taking oatmeal right now and we are in the process of determining if she is even ready for solids yet. But, I do have plenty of purees to start with when the time is right.
I always thought it would be time consuming to make purees, but it doesn’t take that much of my time and I enjoy making it for them.
So far, I have made sweet potato, carrot and squash puree. My parents have some fruit trees on their property and have always made our children their apple, pear and peach purees. These have been in my basement since the fall and I just need to get the fruit into ice cube trays and frozen.

Some books for reference that I have used are First Meals and Super Baby Food. Also, check out Stephanie at Keeper of the Home. She is doing a series on raising healthy eaters and has a lot of helpful information.

Getting Your Children To Eat Healthier

On Oprah today, Jessica Seinfeld was talking about her new book Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food. It is full of recipes that utilize vegetable purees. It’s a great way to get your kids to eat their vegetables. The recipes are also low in fat.

Magic Tree House

I was recently looking for a chapter book to read aloud with Caleb and found the Magic Tree House series.
The series features Jack and Annie who travel to historical places using a magic tree house. They travel to different places by opening a book in the tree house, pointing at a picture and wishing they could go. The series also has research guides that give more information about the historical places that Jack and Annie visit.
Caleb and I have just finished the first book, Dinosaurs Before Dark, and will begin reading the next book soon. We are going to take a small break and read Charlotte’s Web first.
