Hearts at Home

I will be at the National Hearts at Home Conference tomorrow. I can hardly wait for a day of rest, relaxation and learning how to be a better mommy and wife. I am going with a friend that I went with last year and we had a great time together. I am sure this year will be just as great.

The best part is that the conference is only 5 minutes from my house. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Homemade Baby Purees

One of the things I have done for all of my children is to make their first baby food purees. I decided that is was time to start making some for my daughter, so I have spent the last week making her first purees and getting them stashed in the freezer. She is only taking oatmeal right now and we are in the process of determining if she is even ready for solids yet. But, I do have plenty of purees to start with when the time is right.

I always thought it would be time consuming to make purees, but it doesn’t take that much of my time and I enjoy making it for them.

So far, I have made sweet potato, carrot and squash puree. My parents have some fruit trees on their property and have always made our children their apple, pear and peach purees. These have been in my basement since the fall and I just need to get the fruit into ice cube trays and frozen.

What Remains…

If I spend my days building skyscrapers with LEGOs and creating relationships with other moms at Starbucks, but have not love, I am only the sireon of the kids’ ride-on fire truck.

If I have the gift of knowing which child attempted to flush the Hot Wheels down the toilet and which one pushed her sister, and if I have faith that somehow we’ll survive life’s emergencies, but have not love, I am nothing.

If I save all my box tops for school and give outgrown clothing to the local shelter, and if I surrender my body to stretch marks and under-eye circles, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient when someone isn’t ready to use the big-girl potty. It is kind when my husband has a hard day. It doesn’t envy my neighbor who drive the new sport-utility vehicle I can’t afford.

It is not rude, snapping at my spouse or children when things don’t go my way. It is not easily angered at perceived or real injustices.

It always protects the smallest, sweetest family confidences; always trusts God to provide for my children’s needs; always hopes in the freshness of tomorrow and the bright future of family; always perservers amid hardship and doubt.

Where there are sleepless nights, they shall end. Where there are diapers, Little League, and dioramas built from shoe boxes, they will cease. Where there is knowledge of baby-care trends, discipline strategies, and boy-girl problems, it will pass away.

Now these three remain: faith, lived out in my daily circumstances and instilled in my children; hope, of one day rejoicing with my family in hdaven; and love, which covers over a multitude of less-than-perfect moments.

But the greatest of these is love. It is what remains….long after I am gone.

Parenting is More Challenging and Rewarding than Feminist Thinks

Becoming a stay-at-home mom 3 years ago has been the most rewarding and challenging thing I have ever done. I have been able to share every moment of my childrens lives which is very rewarding. Although, there have been many challenges. The biggest challenge right now is dealing with a 3 year old who thinks he is ready to run his own life. But, I wouldn’t change a thing…afterall, I get free hugs and kisses all day.

This article (found via this article) by feminist Linda Hirshman is the most disturbing thing I have read in quite some time. She says that “she thinks staying at home with the children is an occupation not worthy of the full time and talents of intelligent and educated human beings”. Ann Coulter of the Huffington Post writes that “Hirshman and those who think like her, are expressing an intolerant world view that women who don’t work are losers”. Some of the women she interviewed confirmed her worst fears, they liked being mothers. Imagine, getting satisfaction from something that doesn’t require giving your life away to a corporation and leaving someone else to raise your children.

I am of the opinion that my current career is harder than anything that I did working outside the home. But, it is a choice that every woman needs to make for herself.
